Circuit Training
Circuit Training is widely recognised as an
excellent way to simultaneously improve mobility, build strength and
develop stamina. The format utilizes groups of exercises, completed one
after another for a specified period of time (typically 20, 30 or 40
seconds), separated by brief timed rest intervals of 10 or 15 seconds. One
circuit will normally comprise 12 to 18 different exercises. The exercises
are designed to provide a total body workout using a minimum amount of
equipment. All major muscle groups are covered in a balanced blend of
resistance and cardio training which provides a demanding physical test
over a period of 35 to 45 minutes. Each complete circuit is separated by a
longer timed rest period [1-2 minutes] and a class will normally involve 3
circuits. An extended period of warm-up/cool down exercises and stretching
precedes and concludes every session.
Circuit Training is suitable for all levels
of ability as participants can perform each exercise at the level of
intensity most comfortable for them - this will be determined by the
individual's strength and cardiovascular conditioning. Whatever the level
of the participant, regular circuit training will lead to rapid and
dramatic improvement of all-round fitness.
Circuit classes involve an extremely varied
program of exercise, eliminating the monotony and boredom involve in some
other types of training. The group dynamic further enhances the
experience, with groups of 3-5 people usually assigned to each exercise on
the circuit. The sequence of the exercises is carefully chosen to provide
the best possible combination of muscular conditioning and endurance
training.
